Which is Best For You?
You’re not alone – these are two of the hottest elliptical trainers on the market today.
They both give you an edge over standard elliptical trainers and can help you burn more calories per workout.
So how are they different when you compare them against each other?
Let’s take a look at some of the key differences between them.
Lateral X vs Max Trainer – Price
The Max Trainer is a little more affordable starting around $999 up to $2300 depending on the model you choose.
There are 3 different Max Trainer models, each varying by console features, resistance levels and workout programs.
However they all give you the same high-calorie-burning design that made the Max Trainer famous.

The LateralX trainer starts a bit higher around $1999 and ranges up to $2999 as of this writing.
There are 2 main models. While they vary by console and features, they both have the same design that lets you do lateral, side-to-side elliptical motion.
Lateral X vs Max Trainer – Lower Body Motion
This is where you see one of the key differences between these two ellipticals. The Bowflex Max gives you more of a stair-stepping, up-and-down motion:
The Lateral X elliptical gives you an elliptical forward running motion – and it also adds in a side-to-side lateral motion as you can see below:
So basically with the Lateral X you are working out in 3 different planes – forward, back and side-to-side. This has the benefit of giving you an amazingly rich crosstraining experience.
So while the stair-climbing motion of the Max Trainer is obviously effective and will give you a great workout, the Lateral X will give you more crosstraining options overall.
Lateral X vs Max Trainer – Calories Burned
Both machines give you an advantage over your standard elliptical trainer. Bowflex has done studies on both machines to prove this.
According to the Manufacturer, the Max Trainer can help you burn up to 2.5 times more calories than a regular elliptical machine.
The Lateral X trainer can help you burn up to 39% more calories than a regular elliptical machine
So if you’re just going by the numbers, the Max Trainer will, in theory, help you burn more calories than the Lateral X. However to be fair you have to compare apples to apples.
The machine that will give you the best results is the one that you actually use (and continue to use). So it’s best to have a machine that you enjoy using.
Calories burned will also depend on whether you’re doing the HIIT training workouts included with the trainers, your current fitness level, age, gender and how long you stay on the machine.
It’s also important to note that the Max Trainer has been around a bit longer than the Lateral X – so it has a lot more weight loss testimonials. So overall the Bowflex Max has the slight edge over the Lateral X when it comes to fast calorie burning.
Lateral X vs Bowflex Max – Entertainment / Tracking
Both the Lateral X and the Max Trainer consoles give you a place to put your tablet. This is a handy feature since you can set up your tablet and either surf the web as you workout – or watch YouTube or Netflix videos.
So it’s a great way to add some fun to your workout time.
The Lateral X consoles are both backlit and easy to read – and they’re a bit larger than the Max Trainer consoles as you can see from the pics below.
The Max Trainer M6 and M8 models comes with backlit consoles (however the M3 console is not backlit so it’s a bit harder to read).
Both the Lateral X and Max Trainer are Bluetooth compatible (except the Max Trainer M3 model which is not Bluetooth compatible). You can use the Free Bowflex App to track your workouts online, set new goals and see how far you’ve come.
The Lateral X ellipticals come with a Free 12 Week Workout Plan with Free Workout Videos as well. So the Lateral X may have a slight edge here as far as tracking, workout and entertainment options.
Lateral X vs Max Trainer – Space
The Max Trainer is a bit more compact than the Lateral X trainer (although both machines are smaller than a standard elliptical).
For example the Max Trainer M6 model has a footprint of 50″ L x 30.5″ W compared to the Lateral LX5 model footprint of 53.5″ L x 46.3″ W.
So if you’re really worried about space considerations, the Max Trainer might be the better machine to go with.
So which is better for you – the Lateral X vs Max Trainer?
Well, it really comes down to what’s most important to you. The Max Trainer has the edge when it comes to calorie burning. It also takes up less space and is a bit easier on the budget.
The Lateral X however is more of a “true” elliptical in the sense that you can go forward and back.
It also adds in side-to-side lateral motion which is the best option if you want the ultimate crosstraining experience. For this reason it’s also great for athletes or serious trainers who want to add that extra challenge to their workouts..
So at the end of the day it really comes down to what you want.
